Wurlitzer Model 200A
We are very happy to announce that we now have a Wurlitzer Model 200A electric piano in our studios! This classic electric piano was used by many artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Joe Zawinul, Queen, Sun Ra or Marvin Gaye. It was first manufactured in 1954 and was in production until 1983.
The sound is produced by striking a metal blade with a hammer, which induces an electric current in a pickup. Conceptually it is similar to the Rhodes piano, but the sound is different.
Compared to the Rhodes piano, the Wurlitzer's sound is sharper and more like a sawtooth wave, while the Rhodes' sound is more like a sine wave. As a result, the Wurlitzer has a sharper and punchier sound that comes across better in a band mix. When played softly, the sound can be sweet and vibraphone-like, sounding similar to the Rhodes, while when played harder, it becomes more aggressive and produces a characteristic, slightly overdriven tone.
It spans five octaves and has a built-in tremolo circuit. It has two internal speakers, but can also be connected to an external amplifier.
